We all surround ourselves with furnishings hammered out of pressed wood or blow molded in a factory.
In modern furniture, the weight of glue is usually more than the weight of the wood. (usually chipped wood or sawdust)
Every home needs a quality piece of furniture made the old way. From solid hardwood lumber. Hand planed. Hand crafted. Hand stained and finished. Hand polished. And loved forever.
When you order a piece of furniture from us, you may be surprised at the lead time.
That's because when you order the piece, it may still be at the lumber yard. We draw a 3D design it on the computer. We ask you about size, finish and hardware. We give you a quote with a drawing. Only when you approve the drawing do we cut the first piece of lumber.
It takes a while to craft an heirloom piece for your home. We hope you understand.
From Cutting Boards to Kitchen Cabinets, we can help you fall in love with your your surroundings.
If you are unsure about what you want, we have a catalog of ideas. From simple and small to complicated and...massive. Beds, tables, chairs, cabinets, dressers, decor, bookcases, and primitives. Expensive? Sometimes, but valuable. Made for a lifetime.
With few exceptions, we use domestic hardwoods. Red and White Oak, Cherry, Walnut, Ash, Soft and Hard Maple, Hickory, and some specialty woods.
One specialty is quarter sawn lumber (especially in White Oak) as well as figured Maple (birdseye, flame, and curly)
Sometimes we can find spalting in various species, which is usually a welcome surprise.
Every piece we create is done on the computer first. We lay out the drawings digitally before we buy a stick of wood. The 3D software allows us to keep waste to an absolute minimum and saves manufacturing time, as well.
A picture of your 3D model is provided at delivery with production notes and any changes made.
We take your piece seriously and hope you will, too.
We have an older workshop.
Some power tools, such as our cabinet saw, date from the 1960's. Some of our hand planes and chisels are even older.
These well cared-for tools have been used by skilled craftsmen for decades.
We hope to continue the history of craftsmanship they bring to our shop.
Our strategies for finishing are both old and new. One of the best finishes we've ever used is a linseed oil/polyurethane mix.
The new finish, a totally moisture and heat resistant finish, catalyzed varnish, is a revolutionary change in finishing.
Catalyzed conversion varnish consists of two parts, the finish liquid and a hardener that gets mixed in right before it's applied.
It is designed for a lifetime of use.
Designed and built for you. Material, measurements, finish, all your decision. We are glad to quote whatever you would like.
